Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Basic Training Program

Professional LCA Traing

DEISO LCA BASIC Training Program.

The number of people participating in LCA training programs is growing worldwide, with an increasing percentage coming from outside Japan for remote training. This trend can be attributed to many factors, including convenience for participants and their employers who want access even when they’re not available at physical locations – but it also reflects how severe environmental concerns have become global-scale issues that require developing skills and utilizing the LCA method.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Basic Training Program

Program Description: This course is designed to give an essential overview of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). It will help your company understand the LCA method and its ISO standard.  To conduct an LCA study from the cradle to the grave, interpreting the results for a specific process and the entire system. By evaluating the LCA results, your company will understand the strengths and weaknesses of your project from an environmental perspective and gain an in-depth understanding of the hotspots of the environmental load of the system. This training will also allow you to progress in the future onto more advanced LCA trading programs offered by DEISO.

This course is designed for up to 15 participants provided on-site or remotely by one of the LCA practitioners of DEISO.  The training covers critical topics using PowerPoint content of each module, visualized content, case studies from academia and industry, the interaction between the participants and the instructor, and assignments. Reference materials can be offered during and at the end of the training and accessible through the DEISO training portal at training.deiso.co.jp.  The materials include PDF files prepared by DEISO for this training with detailed explanations of each module.

Level: This course is well-designed for understanding and practicing the fundamentals of LCA. It is suitable for those with no previous knowledge of LCA and essential background knowledge. This course is ideal for all sectors, but it’s it put more focus on the industry (system processes, manufacturing, and technology).

Expected outcome: By completing this training, a participant is expected to have a complete understanding of the LCA methods, its data, and how to collect it, how to decide and use the appropriate data, understand the LCA applications and benefits, especially from an industrial perspective, how to conduct an LCA study from the cradle to the grave and understand and interpret the results. You will be able to start the next level of advanced LCA training programs offered by DEISO.

Required Background: No LCA background is required for this course.

Training Content:

  1. Module 01 (1 hour)

An introduction to the LCA method: The concept of the LCA method; its construction; its applications; its advances; and its benefits with regards to the environmental issues, product and technology development, and sustainability.

  1. Module 02 (1 hour)

The LCA framework: The LCA method involves a 4-stage process. Involving goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment, and interpretation. Scope: Cradle to Grave with a particular focus on Cradle to Gate.

  1. Module 03 (2 hours)

Environmental indicators: LCA results can include up to 20 different environmental indicators, such as global warming potential (carbon footprint), human toxicity, eutrophication potential, acidification potential, water, and energy depletion, etc. A wide range of Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) methods was developed to drive these indicators, such as CML, ReCiPe, and several others. This course focuses on the most popular methods with up to 14 most important indicators. We will provide an overview of what each of the main indicators means, how they happen and what types of impacts and damage they could cause.

  1. Module 04 (2 hours)

Data and tools: An overview of the primary data sources and software packages. An introduction to data collection and primary and secondary data. This is a crucial part of our LCA training. We pay special attention to the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data, also known as the background data. There are several databases available such as ecoinvent (used in SimaPro and GaBi ts software and others), GaBi databases (used in GaBi to software), Inventory Database for Environmental Analysis (IDEA), a Japanese database used in the MiLCA software and other databases. We go through them and discuss how to use each of them, industrial areas, projects, countries, etc. We also focus on the foreground data, which the end-user should collect. We discuss what this data means, its importance, and how to collect it.

  1. Module 05 (4 hours)

LCA modeling: You will be introduced to modeling an entire project from the design phase and data collection to the interpretation of the results.

  1. Module 06 (1 hour)

Midpoint and endpoint modeling: You will be introduced to midpoint and endpoint modeling. This is essential to understand when identifying the key environmental issues and interpreting results and the difference between the two approaches.

  1. Module 07 (3 hours)

Interpreting the results: This module helps to understand LCA results by looking at the system’s overall system (the model) and specific processes. Rather than to just only gain an outlook of the system, you will learn how to identify the hotspots of the entire model. There are several ways of presenting LCA results. We will provide examples of LCA results to show how you need to take care of how results are presented and interpreted and what to look at and use tools such as Microsoft Excel, Tableau, and the suitable graphs to look at each part of the system. We also focus on how to understand the inventory results (the emission amounts) and their emissions medium: to air, water, and soil (industrial and agricultural soil). We pay special attention to GHG emissions, especially Carbon Dioxide.

  1. Module 08 (2 hours)

Case study: We will use a case study to explore LCA results and the key points from this training program. We will also conduct a simple LCA study and discuss the results.

Certificates: Optionally, a course completion certificate can be issued to every participant who attended the training with extra fees per attendee. A participant receives the certificate after completing all the assignments and passing a 2-hours oral examination that covers the topics of the modules.

NOTE: Our client may request to eliminate any of the training modules. However, adding additional modules/topics is subject to extra cost.

Program Schedule: A proposed schedule of the program will be prepared and sent to the client upon the agreement of the quotation.

Frequently Asked
Questions on our LCA Training.

How it works?
  1. We offer remote training and in-person training. If remote training isn't suitable for your needs, we can arrange a time to visit our office in Japan at your expense.
  2. We offer training to customers in Japan. The process can happen either online or at a location of your preference at your own expense for transportation and accommodation.
  3. This is how remote training works: (1) We use the Zoom app and Zoom whiteboards to deliver training materials and interact with trainees. (2) If any training modules contain an option for licensed LCA software (GaBi, SimaPro, MiLCA, or OpenLCA), the trainee must have a license of the desired LCA software (e.g., GaBi or SimaPro), and the software is installed on the trainees PC. We must remotely access the trainee's PC during the session(s) that involves training on LCA software. (3) If the trainee has no licensor for LCA software, we can still provide the training using a free commercial demo with limited functionality. However, this does not lower the training course.
  4. We offer 30-60 minutes of free remote consultation: Our consultants can help you choose which type of training would make the most sense to meet your individual needs. We offer one hour of free remote consultation to help you figure out what level of training would best suit your knowledge, experience, and LCA skill set. We are not currently offering just basic LCA one and advanced LCA training.
  5. We take full privacy and security measures for the PC remote access of our trainee(s).
  6. Trainees can access our training portal at training.deiso.co.jp to submit any assignments they need and download slides, materials, and training materials relating to the specifics of the assignments. Optionally: trainees can write short feedback of 3 questions after each session outlining what they have learned during the session(s) and difficulties they encountered in prior sessions so that we can work together to improve the quality of training and if there is anything that needs improvement based on their feedback; this way we can understand what sorts of things are difficult for the trainees to work on and do my best to help!
  7. During the first training session, we take 10-20 minutes to address the questions that of the previous training session the participant(s) had. Training usually lasts from 2 – 4 hours with 20-30 minutes of breaks.
Do you offer custom training plans?

Yes!

  1. We also offer LCA software-specific training programs for SimaPro, openLCA, MiLCA, and GaBi. We also create customized training plans for individuals of basic or advanced levels that want to learn about LCA software (40% standard LCA training and 60% explicitly relating to the LCA software the client chooses).
  2. We also offer LCA software-specific training programs for GaBi, SimaPro, openLCA, and MiLCA. We can also create an individualized combination of introductory and advanced LCA courses or review individually tailored 60% "Basic Training Program" or "Advanced Training Program" with
  3. We also offer LCA software-specific training programs for LCA software training only (not for LCA) for any 4 software options available GaBi, SimaPro, openLCA, and MiLCA.
  4. Please note only openLCA is free of charge software as it is open-source.
Do you offer a training certificate?

The training program completion certificate is optional: You must pass a test and complete all the assignments after the training period to receive your certificate. The fee for the examination and the certification takes an extra cost on top of your training fees, and if the trainee did not pass the first time, they can purchase another exam ticket. However, most of our clients pass with no difficulties, especially with basic LCA. The exam is available every month after the six-month training ends. After six months, the trainee needs to retake the trading course and the examination.
